Mary Jane BAUER

Senior Undergraduate

2025-2026

Mary Jane is a fourth-year undergraduate student at Northern Michigan University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Biology. She has a background in rope access and is skilled in ecological rope access data collection. Her research interests include wildlife species interactions, and conservation biology - specifically the effects of climate change and habitat loss on wildlife behavior and survival. Currently she is using camera trap data to determine the nature and the seasonal occurrence of wildlife around the facility shed housing a colony of Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus). She hopes to further examine whether or how wildlife presence patterns around the Squirrel Colony Facility Shed (SCFS) affect the phenological habits of the squirrels inside.

Camden STEWART

Junior/Senior Undergraduate

2024-2026

Camden is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor in Fisheries and Wildlife Management at Northern Michigan University. He has keen research interests in Animal Behavior and Environmental Physiology. Specifically, Camden's research project aims at understanding how anxiety and exploratory behaviors in a small obligate hibernator, the Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) are impacted by winter thermal conditions. More broadly, Camden develops a large interest in Animals Species Adaptive Responses to Environmental Climatic Changes.

Korben MOELTER

Junior/Senior Undergraduate

2024-2026

Korben is a third-year undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor degree in Biology with a concentration in Ecology. He is an avid outdoorsman and wildlife photographer. His research interests include migration biology, predator-prey interactions, behavioral ecology, and the effect of changing climates on an organism’s physiology. Currently he is finishing his work analyzing Bergmann's gradients in heterothermic species across North America and partnering with the Michigan DNR to assess deer population size and dynamics on Presque Isle in Marquette, Michigan.

FORMER UNDERGRADUATE TRAINEES

Silas PICKHARDT

Bachelor of Science, BSc

2024-2025

Silas graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor's in Fisheries and Wildlife Management in May 2025. During his time with the Energetics Lab, his interests guided him to study the ecophysiology of the hibernator’s heart and work on summarizing a comprehensive proteomic dataset on hibernating hearts from the Garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus), a European species. Aside from his work with the Energetics Lab, Silas’ research focused on topics such as landscape ecology, fire ecology, and forestry. In June of 2025, he began a Master of Science at the University of Tennessee, where he is pursuing a Thesis research focused on tick and tick-borne disease responses to prescribed fire.

Madeline INDERMUEHLE

Junior/Senior Undergraduate

2024-2025

Maddie graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor's in Biology & Biochemistry in May 2025. During the time with the Energetics Lab, Maddie’s interests lied in the ecophysiology of the hibernator’s heart. She worked together with Silas on summarizing a comprehensive proteomic dataset on hibernating hearts from a European hibernating species, the Garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus). Aside from her work with the Energetics Lab, Maddie has great interests in the management of wildlife species including small rodents found under natural habitats. Since June 2025, Maddie works in an animal’s shelter in Northern Wisconsin, her native region with her family. She is looking forward to the next step to continue developing her passion for animal species welfare.
